List of Fiction Series written for Boys

What are MAD numbers?

There are a variety of different ways to bibliographically catalog fiction series written for boys. I have found one of the best bibliographies to be "A Collector's Guide to Hardcover Boys' Seres Books" by E. Christian Mattson and Thomas B. Davis.

Within their cataloging system, they have devised a "MAD" number. They have numerically listed the series by series name and assigned each a 5 digit number, which arrange all the series alphabetically. This is the base of the number, formatted as MAD #xxxxx-x-x. The five digit number is followed by a one or two digit number, which is the number of that title WITHIN the series. The final number (for TRUE collectors) is the format number (if a book was issued under a variety of different formats.) Since October 2006, all new inventory of boys series carry their MAD number in the description. We're gradually catching up titles already in inventory.

Dan's Thoughts: I love the vocabulary in these books! The author uses a very rich palate of words to paint his verbal pictures. There are some words and phrases that are used in this series that have unfortunately lost the meanings as used in the early 1900's, and in the contemporary vernacular have vastly different meanings. However, it is a great opportunity to expose today's children to the original meanings of words and explain how language changes with time.
